Does your child need braces?

Question: Many children wear braces. How and when do I know if my child needs braces?

Answer: There are many reasons for a child to benefit from braces, you should have your child examined by a dentist within six months of the eruption of their first tooth and before they are one year old. There is no specific time to start. Although most of the teeth in the mouth are milk teeth (6-9 years old), the treatment of some problems should start as early as possible. Sometimes it is best to wait for most of the milk teeth to fall out (10-13 years).

If your child has regular dental check-ups, your dentist will tell you when a minor intervention or general evaluation of the braces is needed.

These aare some signs that a child needs braces:

Early, late or irregular fall of milk teeth

Difficulty chewing or biting

Teeth that overlap each other, come out in the wrong place, or have a blocked exit path

Jaws that slide or make noise

Biting the cheeks or palate

Teeth that come together abnormally or have too much space between them

Jaws and teeth disproportionate to the rest of the face

Question: Why does the need for braces arise?

Answer: Most orthodontic problems are genetic, so gaping or biting problems run in families. Other problems occur over time due to thumb sucking, mouth breathing, tooth decay, accidents or malnutrition, or there is not enough space for the teeth in the jaw and the teeth overlap or become crooked, and the lower and upper jaws do not line up.

Question: What are the possible benefits of braces for my child?

Answer: Early diagnosis and proper treatment of some bite problems provide both long-term and short-term benefits. Other developmental issues are not so important. In fact, successful orthodontic treatment is possible even in adults, although it is much more likely to be successful in a developing jaw. All problems classified as “bite problem” can be minimized with appropriate orthodontic treatment.

For example:

Overlapping or crooked teeth

Missing or extra teeth

Insufficient or excessive biting

Error in jaw position

Jaw joint disorder

Question: At what age should my child be examined for orthodontic treatment?

Answer: Growth and development assessment and treatment of “biting” problems may begin at various stages of tooth development, depending on the problem, the child’s development, the risks and benefits of treatment or not, and the care and skill of the physician. Some children start to benefit from orthodontic evaluation at the age of 5-6, while others wait until the milk teeth erupt and the permanent teeth are in place (10-13 years). Your general or pediatric dentist will assist you in determining the best time for evaluation and treatment. It is recommended that your child undergo an orthodontist examination before the age of 7.

Question: What is the best age to get braces?

Answer: The optimal age differs from one patient to another. Orthodontic treatment usually begins between the ages of 8 and 14. Children in this age range have at least some of their permanent teeth and are still growing. However, some problems should be treated at an early age, even if most of the milk teeth have not fallen out yet.
